He is forbidden to enter the locked room where books are stored, so he spends many months marbling end pages, tooling leather book covers, and gilding edges. After having suffered some sort of breakdown, though the details of it are blurry, Emmett is sent to the workshop of one such binder to live and work as her apprentice. Once their stories have been told and are bound between the pages of a book, the slate is wiped clean and the story they tell is forgotten. It’s a world in which people visit book binders to rid themselves of painful memories. Please bear this in mind when considering The Binding as a book to read.īooks are dangerous in Emmett Farmer’s world. Personally, I no longer recommend these books – I’m extremely wary of books with queer themes written by authors who engage with transphobic content. I wish I’d read it earlier, honestly.Įdit : It’s come out in the last couple of days that Bridget Collins has been liking and following transphobic content on Twitter. I didn’t actually know anything about it, but when everyone kept telling me it was amazing I finally jumped into it. I picked this book up because I walked past it every day in the windows at Waterstones and the cover and the pages and the hardback under the cover was so beautiful I couldn’t resist. We take those memories and put them where they can’t do any harm.
