![]() ![]() ![]() I also thought there were too many peripheral characters who added nothing to the story other than boring dialogue. When I eventually reached the end I had guessed the killer so not at all surprised sadly the end was really far fetched and I still can't really understand what the motivation of the killer was. I noted that one hour listening time was spent on a dinner party which did nothing to move the plot on. I think one of the problems is the length of the book it is quite short and the action seems to take place over a week with actually not very much happening. The author has tried to do the same with this book but it just does not work. ![]() ![]() One of the reasons I liked Silent Patient was the psychopathology aspect and how the author added authentic details into the narrative which gave the plot another dimension and brought the characters to life. It is impossible not to draw comparisons with The Secret History, elite university, group of special students, charismatic professor, greek tragedy and murder, but any comparison should stop there as this book lacks everything that makes Secret History so fantastic. I have to say I was really disappointed as I found it to be lacking in pace and tension with lots of dull dialogue. The Silent Patient was one of my all time favourite books so I was excited to read The Maidens. ![]()

It is also, like so much Irish fiction, a kind of elegy for Tóibín's childhood home. The new book is full of sly fun, lovely comic observation and an almost tangible pleasure in storytelling. He has been incubating it throughout his creative life. Brooklyn, his first novel since The Master narrowly failed to win the Booker Prize in 2004, springs directly from a story he heard in the aftermath of his father's death, when he was just 12. Even if he did not have a new novel to promote, Tóibín gives the impression he could talk about books and writing to a wall. Once the dust of the Hyland interview began to settle, his American publicist said, wearily: "Could you not go silent for a while?"įat chance. "I wrote every day between the ages of 12 and 20 when I stopped because I went to Barcelona, where life was too exciting to write." And he was always more of a joker than some of his books suggest. More serious now, he says that this "deep need" first manifested itself when he was 12. Tóibín has the head of a Celtic statue but the body and movements of a leprechaun, and his conversation, similarly, flits between gravitas and levity. "And then you know - wham! It was me and Julie Myerson." He now concedes ruefully that, for the immediate future, he is going to be "the guy who wants the money". ![]() ![]() ![]() The $25,000 recognizes the accomplishments of a fiction writer in the middle of her career. She’s tried very, very hard to rid herself of the title “sloper” and to be accepted into a clan known as the Ronar. Nasha is kind of like this tribal woman who’s from an area known as the “slopes” but that’s not exactly a good thing. So, we’ve got three POVs, Nasha, Adrian, and Lynn. I do enjoy it, but it does take brainpower I don’t always have the time or investment for, it’s actually been a while since I’ve had a book this dense and complicated. So, I usually harp on about characters telling things they already know for the reader’s benefit, and this is like the extreme opposite of that approach. Everything, more or less, is left up to reader to figure out on their own. So, there’s not a lot of what people call hand-holding or like, exposition in this book. There was a lot go over, there were a lot of details I didn’t remember so I went back to skim read as a refresher and actually I ended up just sinking into the story and doing a full re-read and enjoying myself a lot more on the second round. So, I read this way back when it was first announced and I went to film a review for this and I just could not come up with words. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ashley joined a large group of friends, family, and members of the Penn and Philadelphia communities and his comments emphasized the importance of perseverance, greeting each day with curiosity, and looking to find the best in yourself.
